I lost contact with the Francis family in 1960. They used to live in Russell Road~ Horsell (No 46 I believe the house facing down towards Horsell High Street). Mrs Francis used to work in the Public House in South Road (The Plough). She had two daughters and a son. The elder daughters name was Sylvia and would have been 17. The son Robert? Was about 10 and the little one about 6. I would appreciate any information as to how they all are and if possible make contact with them. I lived in Waldens Park Road

I am just passing this site and was wondering if any one in the old Saint Johns area still remembers me?I used to live in Robin Hood Road in the late 50s and went to the old infants school and the junior school as well as the secondary school in Knaphill and the ''new'' Winston Churchill school in the late 60s.we left the area in 1969 and went to Australia and have now been here for the last 40 years.I have a brother Robin and another brother Michael as well as two younger not at school when we were there.

I am seeking information on two friends I have not seen since 1960. They both lived in the Woking~ Surrey area and married in the summer of 1963. Sylvia's maden name was Francis. They will be in their mid to late 60s now so it has been a long time. We together with other fiends Staggy~ Sambo and others all used to meet up at Crown's coffee Bar in Woking. If anyone knows them or has information I would love to hear. I hope they have not emigrated as I would not know where to start looking for them. Sylvia had a brother and a sister~ who was slightly handicaped. I believe her brother was about 6 years younger and her sister about 10 years younger so would be in their 50s or early 60s now. I believe her brothers name was Robert I cannot recall her little sisters name. They lived in Russell Road Horsell

I am researhing my mother's family. Some records indicated that her mother may have lived in Woking-Surrey. Her parents are listed on her marriage certificate as Samuel Brown and Emily Macklin. Her name was Sophia Mary Brown. She was born Nov. 1872 (posibly 1871) She immigrated to the US in 1900 where she married and stayed until her death. I have been unable to find birth records for her in spite of several tries through the GRO. Any help or further suggestions would be appreciated. (I am in the US so doing my own footwork at this time in England is imposible).

My great-grandfather~ Henry Gillham~ was born at Horsell c1848. It is possible that he was born at a gypsy encampment on the common. Does anyone have any infomation on the gypsy camp of the Gillham family?**Many thanks.

Thank you, Alan. Yes, that's the right family. Henry and Mary Gilham moved to Palehouse Common, Sussex and then to Waltham Cross, Hertfordshire.
I thought they might be travellers because my brother-in-law says that Tillier is a Romany surname. Gilham can also be. Please contact me if you want to swap family details. angiemarywhite@yahoo.co.uk

If I've got the right Henry Gilham he was the son of William Gilham and Lois Hampton and married Mary Tillier. They did indeed live on Horsell Common in Anthonys opposite the Bleak House pub (http://www.woking.gov.uk/woking/living/magazine/routewinter09.pdf). I don't know that it was a gypsy encampment but there were definitely a lot of Gilhams and Hamptons who lived there. The Hamptons are certainly a local family rather than travellers coming from Pirbright. The grave of William and Lois Gilham can be found in Horsell Churchyard.
I have a full family tree available if you are interested.

I believe that my father-in-law~ Henry Frank Turner and his brother Ernest George Turner may have **attended this school 1905-1909. Also their two half brothers Ernest John Gosden and Frederick James **Gosden. Their mother was Alice Margaret Gosden (nee Turner) and father (step-father) was Ernest **Gosden. It is possible that they lived for a time at Springfield Cottage. After their mother died~** The two Turner boys were sent out to Canada in March 1910 while the two Gosden boys remained **in the area. Interested to know if anyone has heard of them?
