Does anyone know the location of the Cotherstone Acadamy which was run by my ancestor John Chapman until he moved it to Headlam Hall in 1803?**I believe John's school building in Cotherstone was taken over by his brother George Chapman. George's school at Cotherstone was one of those 'Yorkshire Schools' investigated by Charles Dickens before he wrote Nicholas Nickleby (published 1838) and may have been the person upon which Squeers of Dotheboys Hall was based.**George placed advertisements in the London Morning Chronicle such as this one on 24 Sep 1819:**'EDUCATION.- Young Gentlemen are carefully and advantageously EDUCATED~ by Mr. GEORGE CHAPMAN~ Cotherstone~ Yorkshire## they are instructed in all the useful branches of the Mathematics requisite for the counting house and map of business~ are treated with kindness~ and in every respect as one of their own family## they are liberally boarded~ clothed and educated~ for 20 guineas per annum## no vacation. The Greek~ Latin and French Languages~ and drawing~ are extra. Particulars and respectable references of Mr. Maylam~ agent~ 19~ Berner's-street~ Church-street~ White-chapel. - Mrs. Chapman is in town~ and will accompany the pupils down early in October.'

Mr. & Mrs Field met on Lord Vesty's Yacht, they lived from 1908 to 1918 on Morris Grange near Scotch Corner. Norman Fields was the nephew of Marshall Fields who was the founder of US Department Stores.
He bought Streatlam Castle and the estate as well as Lartington Hall and lived in Lartington until he died in 1957. Mrs Olive Fields remained in the hall until she died in a car crash in 1973.
I find it very interesting your great Grandmother was a servant at the hall because my Great grandfather (Joe Lancaster) was The Butler and my Great Grandmother (known as Bell) was the cook.
I am in the process of building a website about Lartington Hall, if you would email me your email address - i'll gladly give you the address once it's posted on the web. On there, you will be able to find out all about the hall.

Hi Martin
Sorry havent been on this site for ages, I got some info wrong. My GT grandmother was a maid before Lartington Hall her name was Mary Robson she gave birth to my grandmother in 1894 and the story goes her father was a FIELDS but I dont know which one. I would love to know any history on the Field family and where my great grandmother could have worked for them,,, I know they lived at another address before Lartington Hall. You can email me on debbi.50@virginmedia.com I am convinced that I am possibly related to the FIELDS???? STRANGE THING IS MY FATHER USED TO VISIT nORMAN AND oLIVE AT bARNIE MY DAD USED TO WORK HIS BEAT WHEN HE FIRST JOINED THE POLICE FORCE IN THE LATE 50'S EARLY 60 AS MY MAM AND DAD LIVED IN BARNY...
