A man has been found dead at a house in Luton by emergency crews investigating reports of a gas leak.

Another man was found at the house in Buxton Road on Monday who was believed to be intoxicated, police said. He was taken to hospital and later discharged.

Bedfordshire Police were alerted when four men went to the station to report a strong smell of gas near the house.

A spokeswoman said the death was being treated as suspicious until a post-mortem examination takes place later.

Detectives from the Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Major Crime Unit have been called into oversee the inquiry, she said.

Emergency services planned to evacuate the road shortly after the initial report at 2015 GMT.

But a gas company found a kitchen appliance had been left on and declared the area safe after turning it off.

The four men who reported the incident are now helping the police with their inquiries.
