BARNSLEY VALUES BEAT THE SUPERMARKETS

Can free range, farm reared meat really be cheaper than the more luxurious supermarket meat ranges?

Silkstone’s Broad Close Farm says yes as they beat supermarket prices and dispel the myth that buying local from a specialist producer is expensive.

Nicola and Jonathan Charlesworth, the latest generation of Charleworths to farm in the area, visited a number of local supermarkets to conduct a price comparison against their premium meat produce and found locals could be saving over £12 a month.

The most shocking finding from their shopping trip was that although the comparison was made against the supermarkets more up-market ranges they couldn’t be sure the meat was free range or even British!

If that isn’t enough the majority of our most popular cuts of meat have dramatically increased in price in the supermarkets only adding to the domestic financial pressures we are all currently facing.

Nicola from Broad Close Farm says: “We conducted this research to educate ourselves more than anything and we couldn’t believe what we found. I know we all find it easier to buy everything from the supermarket; it’s easy and we think it’s cheaper! We’ve proved it definitely isn’t cheaper and to be honest the quality would be debatable compared to meat that is fresh off the farm.

“We try not to preach but we wouldn’t be from Barnsley if we didn’t.  We really would like our community to know and understand that good quality doesn’t mean expensive. We have our values and that’s based around honesty in how we farm, how our animals live and the price our meat is sold for.”
