A FATHER and son duo from Guildford have raised £1,000 for cancer charity thanks to the support of the local community.
On Sunday 10 April, Simon Collins - who by day is the store director and optometrist at Specsavers in Guildford, located at 23 Friar Street – laced up his trainers to run the gruelling 26.2-mile Brighton Marathon. The 49-year-old used the run to raise funds for the Teenage Cancer Trust.
Mr Collins was accompanied by his son Jack who is currently studying his A-levels with a view to studying medicine at university.
Simon says: ‘I am pleased that by running in this marathon we can play our own part in helping so many teenagers. I would like to thank the store staff, who have been really supportive of both myself and the charity. I hope that the local community digs deep to continue to help us raise much-needed funds for the charity.’
Jack Collins says: ‘The Teenage Cancer Trust is such an important charity and we would like to thank everybody who helped us reach our target by cheering us along the way.’
Teenage Cancer Trust grew out of the dedication and passion of a group of women who discovered the plight of teenagers with cancer by chance. The women went on to raise funds to build the very first Teenage Cancer Trust unit at the Middlesex Hospital in London in 1990 and aims to build enough units so that by 2012, every teenager in the UK will have access to the specialist support they provide.
